Bike Daze: SCARP x ECU bike workshop
Location
Kickstand
Date
Spring 2026
Role
Workshop leader
Project type
Facilitation
As part of our Transmissions project, we teamed up with students at SCARP, the UBC planning master's program, to facilitate a workshop for our peers and friends. The workshop was split into three parts: bike maintenance, led by Bobby, an ex-mechanic studying at SCARP, and mapping, led by Amanda, a SCARP student with a degree in Landscape Architecture, and finally, the craft portion of the workshop, led by Candela and me.
For our portion of the workshop, we wanted to focus on sourcing secondhand materials, practicing the art of forgoing convenience, and making things work in creative ways. We believe the acts of teaching and learning are crucial in community building, and we were able to experience this firsthand during our workshop. The attendees of the workshop were a mix of UBC and ECU students, as well as friends and partners, all with a common appreciation for bikes. Many people were meeting for the first time, and the workshop acted as a steady base to build connections off of.
